You\u2019re probably thinking I\u2019m saying that because my reviews have always been good, that I always received lots of positive feedback.<\/p>\n
Well, no: missed targets, leadership behaviour that could be developed, blind spots, you name it I\u2019ve probably had it. But don\u2019t fear I\u2019ve had plenty of exceeded targets and being recognised for my management skills \u2013 I thank you very much\u2026.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ll tell you my worst annual review nightmare: \u201cOn the whole everything is fine\u201d, Fine? What\u2019s fine? \u201con the whole\u201d? Do you mind breaking it down a little?<\/strong><\/p>\n You\u2019re rolling your eyes? I should be glad there is no big issue being pointed out?<\/p>\n I hear you but tell me what to do with \u201cOn the whole everything is fine\u201d if I have a level of consciousness slightly higher than that of my front door and I\u2019m keen to develop myself and my career?<\/p>\n NOTHING!<\/strong> That\u2019s the kind of annual review run by a seriously lazy manager or one scarily challenged in the leadership department.<\/p>\n But hey, if you accept it why should he\/she changed and put in the work to give you a proper annual performance review.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n You\u2019re serious about developing yourself and achieving a rewarding career?<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Taking charge of your review impacts your mindset.<\/strong> You get into a more positive and, more importantly, into a growth mindset: open-minded, eager to learn and ready to reframe negative experiences into opportunities<\/p>\n The first consequence of this shift is to refuse the \u201cslap on the back, let\u2019s do it over a pint at lunchtime\u201d annual review<\/strong>. Come on, a whole year of hard work? I\u2019m worth more than that!<\/p>\n Then set higher expectations:<\/strong><\/p>\n Feedback?<\/strong> I want facts, not \u201cI think that..\u201d or \u201cshe said\u2026\u201d. Give me dates and a clear description. I\u2019m not just talking about so-called negative feedback, if it\u2019s good I need the details too so I can fully integrate it and reproduce it.<\/p>\n Preparation?<\/strong> I\u2019m not just filling a form so don\u2019t call the meeting in 20 mins \u2013 and I think dear Manager you will need more time too.
